Nie is a surname originated from the name of a place. There are two main origins. 1) During the Chun Qiu Period, a duke of the Wei Kingdom was given the province of Nie (north of Qing Feng in Henan). His descendents are known as the Nies. 2) In ancient time, there was a place called Nie Bei (West of Ren Ping in Sandong). During the Chun Qiu Period, Nie Bei belonged to the Xing Kingdom. After Xing was annihilated, it belonged to the Qi Kingdom. The people of Nie Bei also called themselves the Nies.
