Famous People in History
The 23rd most common last name in China.
Zhou Xuan Wang of the Zhou Dynasty made his younger brother,
Ji You, the duke of the Zheng kingdom (east of Hua in Shanxi Province). Ji You was known as
Zheng Heng Gong and later became the prime minister of Zhou You Wang. Due to Zhou You Wangs
cruelty, Zheng Heng Gong was worried and decided to escape to the "fertile land"
(east of Le Shui, south of the Yellow River and Ji Shui). Unfortunately, he was killed in a
rebellion, before he could escape. His son succeeded him and helped the new king,
Zhou Ping Wang to suppress the rebellion, and reestablished
the Zheng kingdom at the "fertile land". In 375 B.C., the Zheng kingdom was eliminated by the
Han kingdom, and the people began to bear the last name of Zheng ever since.
There are 443 Zhengs listed in the Whos Who in Chinese History, among them:
Ming Dynasty- Zheng He, the famous navigator who sailed to the south seven times
Qing Dynasty- Zheng Cheng Gong, the national hero.
