The 93rd most common last name in China. There are two main origins
to this last name. 1) Descendents of Jiang Ziya
were awarded the kingdom of Yi (Yi in Hebei),
and they bear the last name Yi. 2) During Chun Qiu,
Qi Heng Gong had a judge called Yi Ya (also
known as Yong Wu), who was famous for being a great cook. Qi Heng Gong admired Yi Yas cooking
very much and awarded him the land of Yi. After the death of Qi Heng Gong, Yi Ya was involved
in a rebellion and was killed. His descendents continued to stay at the land of Yi, and changed
their last name to Yi to commemorate Yi Ya.
