The 73rd most common last name in China. There are two main origins. 1) During the ancient king Huang Dis reign, there was a tribe leader called Bai Fu, who was a specialist in irrigation. His descendents are known as the Bais. 2) During Chun Qiu, prince Jian of the Chu kingdom escaped to the Zheng kingdom because his father (Chu Ping Wang) listened to a concubine and wanted to kill him. Jian served as a spy for the Jin kingdom and was killed. His son Xiong Sheng fled to the Wu kingdom. After Chu Ping Wang died, Chu Hui Wang took over the throne. A high-ranking judge of Chu, Zi Xi, sent for Xiong Sheng and gave him the land of Bai (south east of Baoxin in Henan). Bai Gongsheng was then known as Bai Gongsheng. Eager to avenge for his father, Bai Gongsheng urged Zi Xi to attack the Zheng kingdom, and Xi Zi promised to do so. Unfortunately, Jin attacked Zheng, at this instance, and in order not to let Jin expand its power, Zi Xi of the sent troops to rescue Zheng instead. Bai Gongsheng considered Zi Xi to have betrayed him, he killed Zi Xi and imprisoned Chu Hui Wang. General Ye of the Chu kingdom suppressed this rebellion and Bai Gongsheng killed himself. His descendents also have the last name Bai. (Bai means white).
