Macao (1535 A.D. - present) Macao has a population of about 426,000, with 96% of them being Chinese and 3% Portuguese. In 1535, Portugal obtained the right to trade in Macao and the Portuguese began preaching there. Pope Gregory XIII assigned Macao as a Diocese in 1576, and it became the center of culture and religion exchange during the 16th Century. Nowadays, there are 16,400 Catholics (7.4%), 2,820 Protestant Christians (1.3%) and 4.4% of people are of other religion.
