Francesco Sambiaso (1582-1649) Born in Italy, Sambiaso became a Christian in 1603. He arrived at Macao in 1610 and came to Beijing in 1613. During a ban on Catholicism by the Ming Dynasty, Sambiaso was forced to stay at Hangzhou and he preached at Jiading. He also preached in Shanghai and Songjiang in 1622, Henan, Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang in 1628, and returned to Beijing in 1629. Between 1638 and 1644, he preached in Suzhou, Yangzhou, and Ningbo. When the Manchurian entered China in 1644, the Emperor asked Sambiaso to seek rescue from Macao, on behalf of the Ming Dynasty. After the Qing Dynasty brought an end to the Ming Dynasty, he settled in Guangzhou and built a church there. Sambiaso died in 1649. He left behind the following works, Answers in Sleep, Answers in Painting, and translated a book called Words of Spirit with Xu Guangqi.
