Michaele Ruggieri (1543 - 1607) Born in Italy, Ruggieri became a Christian in 1572. In 1578, he joined a missionary trip to China with Matteo Ricci. Arriving in Macao in 1579, he studied Chinese. Ruggieri then proceeded to preach in Zhaoqing, staying in the Tianning Temple. He was soon deported back to Macao. In 1583, he returned to Zhaoqing and began building a Catholic church with Matteo Ricci. The importance of the contribution of Ricci and Ruggieri in the spread of Catholicism in China cannot be overemphasized. He was invited by the governor of Guangzhou to Hangzhou and Zhaoqing in 1585, and he preached extensively in Guiling of Guangxi. Ruggieri returned to Europe in 1588 and lobbied for the European countries to send embassy to China. He died in 1607 leaving behind the following book, 'The Annals of Catholicism', which became a very important reference for the early translation of Catholic doctrines into Chinese.
