Niccolo Longobardi (1559-1654) Born in Italy, Longobardi became a Christian in 1582. He traveled to China in 1597 and preached in Macao and Shaozhou. In 1603, Longobardi built the Shaozhou Church and it has been regarded as the oldest Catholic Church in China. In 1609, he arrived at Beijing and became the president of the Christian Association, following Matteo Riccis death. He also preached in Shandong. Longobardi was known for his opposition for the practice of ancestor worship and Confucianism among Chinese Christians. When he died in Beijing in 1654, Emperor Sun Zhi awarded 300 ounces of gold to commemorate Longobardi. He left behind the following works, Scripture Homework, Death, Earthquakes, and On Spirits.
