Lazaro Cattaneo (1560-1640 A.D.) Born in 1560, Lazaro became a Christian in 1581. Arriving at Macao in 1588, Lazaro proceeded to preach in Shao Zhou, Nanchang and Beijing, assisting Matteo Ricci. In 1604, Lazaro returned to Macao. He accepted Xu Guangqi's invitation to preach in Shanghai and became the first Catholic Missionary in Shanghai. He baptized Xu and some 200 Chinese believers. In 1611, Lazaro accepted Li Zhizao's invitation to preach in Hangzhou. During the adversary of Nanjing Missionary Case, Lazaro fled to Jiading. He returned to Hangzhou in 1622 and stayed there until he died in 1640. He wrote the following books, 'Key to Repentance' and 'Importance of Being Spiritual'.
