Francisco Javier (1506-1552) Born in Spain, Francisco Javier became a Christian while attending school in Paris and was one of the earliest missionaries of France. He became a Father in 1537 and was sent by the Portugal King as a messenger from the Pope to Asia. After arriving at India in 1542, he reached Singapore and traveled to Japan in 1549. Javier attempted to enter China, but was not allowed to land. He was forced to land on the Zanchuan Island near Guangzhou, and he died on the island the following year. Javier was hailed as a forerunner of early missionary to Asia.
