There are two origins of this surname. 1) During early years of Xi Zhou Dynasty, Cheng Wang made his uncle Kang, the Duke of Wei Kingdom in Ying. Kang was given the responsibility of taking care the seven tribes of Ying family, which belonged to the royal family of the previous dynasty. One of the seven tribes bore the last name Fan, 2) Zhou Xuan Wang has a judge called Zhong Shanpu. Zhong was the descendent of Zhou Tai Wangs second son Yu Zhong. With the help of Shao Bofu, Shen Bo, Nan Zhong, and Yin Jipu, Zhong helped Zhou Xuan Wang in his expedition journey to the north. Because of this, the Empire of the Zhou Dynasty was greatly expanded. This period was known in history as the Prosperity of Xuan Wang. With his achievements, Zhong was awarded the Duke of Fan (South west of Ji Yuan in Henan Province).
