Famous People in History
The 7th most common last name in China.
This last name was originally the name of the land awarded to Zao Fu a chauffeur of
Zhou Mu Wang (1,001-946 B.C.). Zao Fu rescued Zhou Mu Wang
during a rebellion, and was awarded the Zhao city (in Shanxi, China). From then on, the
descendents of Zao Fu all bear the last name of Zhao. Later, during the reign of Zhou You Wang,
Zhao Sun Shu (7th generation from Zao Fu) escaped to Jin because of the cruelty of
Zhou You Wang. Sun Shu brought with him Zhao Shuai, the grandson of Zhao Su You (5th
generation). Zhao Shuai became a powerful official of Jin Wen Gong. During
Zhan Guo period,
Zhao Xiang Zi (7th generation from Zhao Shuai) united Wei and Han and split Jin into
three kingdoms. Zhao thus became one of the seven kingdoms during the Zhan Guo period.
