The 83th most common last name in China. Descendents of Shao Gong, Bo, who was the brother of Zhou Wu Wang and Zhou Gong. During early Zhou, Shao Gong was made duke of Yan. Since Shao Gong was a key member of the Zhou administration, his kingdom was governed by his oldest son. Due to Shao Gongs achievements, he was also awarded the duke of Shao (south west of Qishan in Shaanxi). His descendents were big judges in the Zhou Dynasty until the reign of Zhou Li Wang. The Shao kingdom was eventually brought to an end by the Qin kingdom, and its people began to bear the last name Shao.
