Stones that can be captured are dead; Stones that cannot be captured are alive. White cannot simultaneously play at both a and b. Therefore black is alive. Beware of false eyes; white can capture at c before capturing the entire black group at d.
In some situations, neither side is willing to fill in (e.g., at e and f). Both sides are alive, known as a seki (co-existence).
